It has come to our attention that some plan members were concerned that membership in this group might put their pensions at risk. Pensions are paid from a trust fund and are outside the direct control of the company sponsoring the plan (now Great West Life Insurance Company / Power Corporation). The plan is registered under the Pension Benefits Act of Ontario and regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. Please rest assured that any involvement in this group will not have any adverse effect on your pension.

Sep 13 2003 The actuarial valuation as at Jan 1 2003 is now available. Financial Data page has also been updated to reflect this.

Sep 4 2003 The new Trustees for the Canada Life Canadian Employees Pension Plan are James R. (Jim) Grant, D. Allen Loney, and Alexander Symons. Jim Grant is SVP Group Insurance.

Sep 3 2003 During a visit to the FSCO, we learned that Great West Life initiated a partial wind-up of the Canada Life Pension Plan. The members included in the partial wind-up will be those terminated from July 10, 2003 until the end of the wind-up period, approximately 24 months later. Additional information will be added to the website at a later date, and will be included in our newsletters.

Oct 30 2002 Ontario Finance Minister introduces Omnibus bill 198. Part XXV of this bill deals with proposed changes to the Pensions Benefit Act, specifically in the rules dealing with Surpluses in pension plans.

July 19 2002 CL alters its course by refiling the Dec 28th 2001 application for transfer of assets under sec. 8(c), which indicates that title to the surplus is unclear. Pension Group learns of this via the FSCO.

Jun 29 2002 After learning of Dec 28 request for transfer of assets from the Pension commission, Pension Group writes to chair of trustees and CL director of human resources. While we have no objection to the transfer of funds, we are concerned that the request was filed under a clause whereby the company claims full ownership of the pension surplus.

Aug 31 2001 Submission made to the Parliamentary Assistant to the Finance Minister on the proposed reforms of pension surplus sharing rules.

Jul 17 2001 Canada Life declined to hold a vote to establish an Advisory Committee stating that the plan is properly governed and there is no indication of a significant number of members being interested.

Apr 11 2001 Request made to Canada Life to consider setting up an Advisory Committee as provided for in the Pension Benefits Act.

Feb 20 2001 Canada Life secured the supplemental pension plan for high-income employees and retirees by a registered trust.

Jan 26 2001 Canada Life announced a change to the indexing provision of the pension plan. The Members Group is trying to find someone who can clearly explain the effect of this change.

Dec 2 2000 Pensioners won a suit against Great-West Life, who violated the Pension Act when it arbitrarily altered the indexing provisions. Settlement was in the 7-figure range.
